Arranging the Furniture to Welcome Fall

When the night-time temperatures drop below 80 degrees in Arizona, I think about fall.  Thinking about fall makes me thing about nesting... and projects... and entertaining... and cozy nights with lights low and curling up with a blanket (something Arizonans never do.  Ever.).

As the temperatures drop and you gather in your harvest, think about gathering in your furniture as well.

During the Summertime I open up my living space and traffic areas to allow kids room to run and play (remember, I live in 110 degree Arizona).  When October hits I begin to move furniture around... often. If you're blind or went to bed early, my home is dangerous.  Nothing stays in one place for very long and one is likely to trip over a sofa on the way to the bathroom.

Position your furniture for conversation.

Try to keep chairs less than 8 feet apart for easy conversation.  Coffee tables are comfortable at around 14-18 inches distance from the sofa.  Move sofas and chairs away from the wall and position them to face each other.  Choose a main focal point in the room... (like a fireplace or a window) and position furniture around that point.  Don't be afraid to pull in rogue chairs or ottomans to offer extra seating space and a second conversation area in a room... if you're lucky enough to have one that big.  Last year I found a way to seat  10 in a very small living room because I rearranged the furniture.

Don't forget to add the finishing touches to a great cozy fall room.  Books, close intimate lighting, blankets, and even floor pillows help create a space that will make your family and guests want to linger longer.

How do you welcome in Fall with your furniture?

UPDATE::  I am out of town for a family funeral. I'll do my best to have the Friday Weekend Boutique up on time but I'll be driving all day THursday so if it's a little late... be patient!

Great photos! I used to move my furniture around all the time too. I had a back injury a few years ago, and now sadly I can't. But I certainly move the accessories around alot LOL! I swear, nothing in my home looks the same for more than a month or so. It's so much fun to get new looks out of spending so little.

I need to start rearranging too, I'm having a hard time with our living room, which accomodates a 5 foot by 7 foot tent in the shape of a shark for the kids to play in. Haven't found any decorator's who incorporate this into their designs yet. ;)

I like the photos you used to make your point. I wish I could move furniture around, but I'm kind of stuck with it the way it is. I might add accent pieces, like a table or chair, but wind up using throws and changing out pillows to bring it into Fall.

Great pictures and ideas. I am excited this year to welcome fall by changing my recently purchases slipcovered couch. (Ektorp from IKEA) I currently have the taupe covers and bought red for fall. What a change it will make!

I am DYING to rearrange our furniture but can't decide how because we have no place to put our t.v. It's not a flat screen so we can't hang it on the wall...that would be a sight! :)

Great pictures and ideas. Thank you!!
Fall in our home consists of more throws and pillows appearing all around. Centerpieces change from summer floral to fall floral and of course out come the wonderful pumpkin spice candles

I love to rearrange, but now I think I'll do it seasonally, well warm weather/cool weather. That should save me some work since I seem to do it every month just for a different vacuum path! LOL Great pics!

My sofas/chairs have been in the same place for years...I know....gasp - but with our french doors and fireplace I can't get very creative. I'll have to keep thinking.

Very nice photos and awesome tips. You sure know what you're talking about. I laughed out loud though when I read 80 degrees reminds you of fall. Sometimes, that's about the hottest it gets in Canada :) Anyways, thanks for an brilliant article.

Take care, Ella

HI!
Autumn turns into lots of apple peeling now that our trees are finally (after almost 20 yrs) producing fruit!
Manna from heaven!
My living room is kind of "rectangular" and I've found it difficult to decorate for conversation. Any ideas? Any photos anyone?
I'm celebrating my 100th post today :)
This blog was one of the first that made be come back often to blogging! Thanks Pretty Organizer!

Just wondering how you deal with competing focal points. For instance, in our house we have the wall with the fireplace and TV. Adjacent to it is a beautiful view out in to my backyard. How do choose where to place my furniture?

Love the idea of rearranging for the season. Like some of the others, though, I have a rectangular room to deal with without a lot of options. That said-you girls who suggested throws and pillows and accessories to change it up. THANK YOU!!! That's brilliant. I'll be getting on some new pillows as soon as payday rolls around.

For now, I had a somewhat cozy idea of my own. My craft area is small and I needed the space my yarn was taking up. I bought a big basket (with a 1/2 off coupon) and tossed all my yarn in there. It now resides next to the fireplace looking very warm and cozy. :)
